Itinerary
Located on the banks of River Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, or Amdavad as the locals call it, is one of Gujarat’s most prosperous metropolises. With its remarkable history, old-school architecture, fabulous bazaars, and unique traditions, Ahmedabad is a fascinating maze of cultural discoveries.
Your Ahmedabad tour starts with an indulgent cup of Indian masala chai at an old tea stop in a 100-year-old suburb. The stall, now converted into a shop, has a painting by celebrated artist M.F. Husain hanging on its wall — and Husain himself has been visiting the place for more than four decades now.
Post tea, we’ll hop onto a tuk-tuk and visit the Swami Narayan Temple, known for its intricate wood carvings and columns. Dedicated to Lord Swami Narayan, the temple boasts exquisite architecture. We’ll walk past the “pols” of Ahmedabad, derived from the Sanskrit word pratoli, meaning “gate” or “entrance.” The old city was made up of 360 pols and today about a hundred of them are still in existence. You’ll learn about the area’s captivating history as we walk through some of the pols and see sites dating back three centuries, before finally reaching the Manek Chowk city square.
You’ll catch a glimpse of Ahmedabad’s distinctive chabutras, or bird feeding towers, as we proceed toward the Jama Masjid, a mosque with a captivating mix of Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture — and which is believed to have been built from the demolished bits of Jain and Hindu temples.
We’ll then head for a traditional Gujarati breakfast before re-boarding a tuk-tuk and riding to see the Jhulta Minar, or Swaying Minarets of Sidi Bashir Mosque.
Lastly, we’ll visit the 15th-century Panch Kuva step well and take a quick walk to the local textile bazaar. You’ll get to explore the fastest growing commercial hub of the city and take in local culture, tradition, art, and more.
We’ll finish our Ahmedabad tour at the Sidi Sayed Mosque, exhausted and exhilarated!
