Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

Highlights / General details
Here you will find a variety of resident and migratory birds, three different species of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, turtles and Caymans.
Upon arrival, your boat awaits! Enjoy a 2.5 hour river adventure on the Rio Frio! Travel through a tropical rain forest and pastures until we arrive at the marsh. An experienced English-Spanish speaking guide leads the tour.
Although many birds at the refuge migrate here, many are also permanent residents. During our journey it is possible to see hundreds of them (especially during the dry season).
See Anhinga (also known as the snakebird), roseate spoonbill, wood storks, the endangered Jabiru (the largest bird in Central America) and the refuge’s most popular bird, the Olivaceous (who nests in the area). Cano Negro also has the largest colony of cormorants in Costa Rica.
As we travel along the river there will also be the possibility to see howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-Faced monkeys, three-toed sloths, turtles, the basilisk lizard and Caimans.
This trip also includes a traditional Costa Rican lunch, regional fruit, natural juices and coffee at the new Rio Frio restaurant.
