Highlights / General details
The Alcazar Fortress of the Christian Monarchs is a clear example of the Cordovan architectural evolution. The Catholic Monarchs reigned from this palace-fortress for eight years, and the Infantes María and Don Juan were also born here. Originally built as the residence for the caliphs of Cordoba, the Alcazar later became the palace of the Christian monarchs. It was later used as the Inquisition headquarters, then became a civil prison, and finally a military prison. It is set among magnificent gardens, including the garden known as the Avenue of the Monarchs, which features statues of all the monarchs who had connections with the palace-fortress. It was declared a Historical Monument in 1931. The building is also part of the area declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1994. Since 1986, its gardens have been protected by town planning laws.

The Great Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is a mixture of architectural styles superimposed on one another over the nine centuries its construction and renovations lasted. Standing in the historic centre, it is one of the most beautiful examples of Muslim art in Spain, built in 785 by the Muslim emir Abdurrahman I on the site of the ancient Visigoth church of San Vicente.

The Jewish quarter is a complex network of little streets with a typical Andalusian flavour. The Synagogue, one of Spain’s best preserved, is located in the centre of this traditional neighborhood. A Mudejar-style 14th century building, was used as a temple until the Jews expulsion in 1492. The neighborhood, also home to the statue in honor of the Jewish philosopher Maimónides, was an intellectual stronghold in the time of Abderramán III (891 – 961 A.D.).
