Izalco is one of the youngest volcanoes in the Americas, which originated in 1770. For 196 years the volcano erupted almost incessantly, and these eruptions could be seen from the ocean, earning him the nickname "Lighthouse of the Pacific”. His last eruption was in the year 1966 and since then there has been a gradual decrease in activity. It is located 8½ km northwest of the town of Izalco. It’s almost perfect cone is characterized by lack of vegetation, the slopes of this volcano have slopes up to 45 degrees, which is a tough challenge for even the most experienced climbers.
